It’s finally time to start thinking about running the air conditioners again! Spring is right around the corner, and then those long, hot months will be upon us. Make sure your unit is ready to withstand any heatwave with preventative maintenance.
How Much Do You Know About Your AC Unit?
Have you ever looked at your air conditioner and seen a phrase with the word “ton” on it, or have you heard it referenced in commercials and thought, “Do AC units really weigh a ton?!”
Well, you’re not alone because we are always asked what this means, so we are here to tell you!
Air Conditioning Tonnage
Tonnage is a measurement used to rate the amount of cooling your unit is capable of. This term comes from the first ‘air conditioners’ many decades ago. People used to cool buildings, like theaters with tons of ice hanging in a net with a fan blowing on it to distribute the cool air.
Just like how we reference our car’s horsepower, it is a term that was created years and years ago that still references a unit of measurement.
You might also hear the term BTU or British Thermal Unit. This is also a unit of measurement that allows us to know how many tons of cool air it will take to cool a room or building.
