Multistage vs. Modulating HVAC Equipment
When it comes to the HVAC industry, it can seem like there is a lot going on with so many options to choose from in terms of your furnace and air conditioning equipment. When you’re in the market for a new furnace or air conditioner, they all seem the same at first glance, and you wouldn’t really know the difference in the description unless you understand the terms.
Often, when you are looking at different manufactures and models of HVAC equipment, you will see these descriptions:
- Single Stage
- Multistage
- Modulating
Unless you know what those terms mean, you won’t be able to make the right decision on your new HVAC equipment. So, let’s talk about what they mean!
Single-Stage HVAC Equipment
A single-stage furnace is pretty old technology that runs at two settings, blasting the heat at 100% or off. This can give your temporary comfort when it’s cold out with spotty heat circulation throughout the home.
This is also the least energy-efficient option when it comes to running your heat. Though the price of the furnace tends to be lower, your bills end up being higher.
Multistage HVAC Equipment
Multistage or two-stage HVAC equipment is going to be a little more advanced in terms of technology. This allows the furnace to run at half capacity when it’s not too cold out but still cold enough to want to warm up your home without 100% blast from the furnace. Then when it is really cold, you can run it at 100%. The same goes for air conditioning!
This gives you a longer run cycle of better mixing of your heating and cooling. A multistage furnace or air conditioner gives you much more comfort and efficient energy usage.
Modulating HVAC Equipment
Modulating HVAC equipment is even more advanced than the two-stage equipment, offering more precise settings and even more comfort! Modulating equipment can run at a very low and consistent setting, allowing your maximum comfort and minimum energy consumption.
