As of January 2020, all new residential furnaces will come with a new type of motor that focuses on energy efficiency. Until this year, the majority of residential furnaces had permanent split capacitor motors (PSC.) Now these furnaces will come equipped with electronically commutated motors (ECM.)
The reason for this change in the HVAC industry is that electronically commutated motors use about 20 percent less electricity than the old permanent split capacitor motors, and they do the same job. This is great for homeowners as they will see a reduction in their electric bill, but it will also reduce the overall electricity usage of the nation as this new technology becomes integrated into each home.
These new ECM motors are constructed similarly to commercial motors that are able to run continuously through high-efficiency filtration.
