Considering Window Heat Loss when Sizing a Furnace
When you’re talking about windows, those that’s one of the biggest things that comes into play when sizing your furnace and your air. Sizing the right furnace and AC unit for your home is key in proper heating and air conditioning.
Now, talking about furnaces specifically, most of your heat loss comes through windows. It can also come from lack of insulation too but Windows is definitely a big part of it. It especially depends on what kind of windows you have in your home. So the bigger concerns for us would be the quality of the windows, is it double-pane, how old are they, etc.
Newer, Double-paned Windows are More Energy Efficient
How old are the windows in this picture here?
These are newer windows (2-3 years old) and double paned, so they’re very energy efficient. And that’s how most windows are nowadays, especially in new homes. However, older homes don’t always have these types of windows in place.
Many new homes have these “morning rooms” that add more windows to the home. Dan actually had a morning room, in a brand-new house, and he had snow literally flying out of the window’s side. It had to do with the way the window was installed.
Sizing Your Furnace for Efficient Heating
All of these factors and more are taken into account by a professional when sizing a furnace. When you are getting a new furnace, considering how the home’s insulation and windows are affecting energy loss is the first key step to choosing the right furnace. You want to make sure that you’ve got a guy like Jim Forquer that can come out and estimate windows and energy loss.
They take these estimations and put them into a load calculator that allows them to correctly size the furnace for your new home. The same types of calculations apply to air conditioning. And it’s more than just energy loss, it’s also bulbs, how old the home is,
and more.
If you are trying to fix or optimize the heating and cooling of your home, you may want to take a look at your windows and insulation.
