We gather wood from outside all year long to ensure firewood for the cold weather during the winter months. Some of us are fortunate enough to have a lovely fireplace in most of our living rooms. But is this fireplace a good source of heat? Will the wood-burning fireplace keep you warm throughout the cold season?
USING YOUR FIREPLACE INSTEAD OF YOUR FURNACE?
If you’re sitting right in front of the fireplace, then you might feel the warmth. This is because you’re experiencing radiant heat, which also stems from your furnace when you’re feeling the hot air come through the vents in your home.
But once you start to move away from the fireplace, you’ll notice you begin to feel less and less heat as you move further away. Most of the heat generated from the wood-burning will go up into the chimney. You need oxygen to burn wood. Fireplaces draw combustion air from the house, and the air goes up and through cracks and openings in your home, like a doorframe.
Regardless of the type of fireplace you have in your home, it should not replace your furnace if you want to heat the entire house. Fireplaces like the wood-burning ones are suitable for keeping a small section of your home warm for a limited time only.
Some Heating Tips To Keep In Mind
Try not to install a thermostat in the same room as your fireplace. This could cause heating problems down the road. Newer fireplaces are better at heating than older ones due to their higher capabilities and mechanics. More contemporary fireplaces will have room air going out through their venting.
