Two Stage Furnaces Make the Transition More Comfortable
Owner Jim Forquer sits with Jacqui to discuss furnaces. A single stage furnace versus a two stage furnace. You can buy a single stage furnace, which is what you’re used to now. However, through solid state electronics, we have two stage fired furnaces.
The way we explain this to customers is through a comparable scenario. If your car only had neutral and drive, and the accelerator was stuck at 60 miles an hour – it would get you to the store and back, but it would not be comfortable. Now, what if I could give you a car that you went from drive but the first stage of Drive was 30 miles an hour and the second stage of Drive was 60. Now, it’s a much better, more comfortable ride.
Single Stage Furnaces Only Run at One Firing Rate
Well, the old single stage furnaces were all or nothing. When you get a furnace for your home, there are sizing and load calculations done by professionals, so the equipment properly heats your home’s structure (Learn More). If that furnace is sized to heat your house when it’s zero degrees outside (something not uncommon in Ohio), when it’s a 40-degree day that furnace is basically oversized. But it can only run at one firing rate. In your home, you’ll start to get too hot, too cold because it’s sized for 0 degrees.
Now, if we could cut that in half, let’s say on that 50- or 40-degree day, it would fire at half that rate. Well, you’re going to get a longer and smoother running cycle that’s a little quieter. So, the two stage is really a comfort feature. Instead of a rapid heat up or a rapid cool down. You just walk around a nice warm house. Then, when you do need all that heat, as the colder temperatures creep in, the furnace will ramp up the high fire and you’ll get everything that you need to be warm.
Forquer Heating Can Help You Choose the Right Furnace, at the Right Size
If you live in northeast Ohio, in these cold and extreme winters, a single fired furnace is going to do you good. But don’t forget that the weather can jump around and on a 40-50-degree day, it may be too hot for your house. The two stage furnace is a really nice comfort feature. There’s nothing wrong with a single stage just the way we’ve done it for years but now through solid state electronics things and the like, we have the two stage option
